This needs to be an Ad: Mastriano prayed for insurrectionists to seize power on 1/6

Here in PA, we are dealing with a double whammy of nutty assholes at the top of the Republican ticket for statewide races. Dr. Oz, as has been reported elsewhere, is not from here, is running a terrible campaign, and his only selling point recently has been: ‘hey, I can make fun of people who have endured life threatening health issues’. From the outside, he appears to care only about snatching this Senate seat, as if he is entitled to it by virtue of him being famous and knowing a former president. While he was an election denier in the primary, he ‘moderated’ (snark) for the general election by recently saying if he was in the Senate, he’d graciously have voted to certify the 2020 election. Cue Trump meltdown in 3….2….1…. The truth is likely that he’d do anything the former president wanted if elected, because there is no way he’d be in this position without him. Oz is slimy and feckless.

The GOP candidate for Governor on the other hand, is the most dangerous candidate in the country IMHO. Doug Mastriano is a Christian nationalist who wants to meld church and state and whatever is the most extreme position you can imagine he has it: on abortion, on immigration, on guns etc. However, most worrying is that he is the most vocal and vociferous election denier in our state, and the position he is vying for selects the Secretary of State who oversees elections. Electing Mastriano as Governor would be effectively handing the 2024 Presidential election administration over to someone who with that power wouldn’t have certified  Joe Biden in 2020 despite the will of the people.

Our candidate for Gov, Josh Shapiro is an excellent and well spoken candidate and provides a great contrast with the nut job on the other side. He has made the election denialism of the other party a feature of the campaign and is generally running a good campaign. Right now he is polling an average of 7-8 points ahead. That just feels too close for comfort still.

In this context, I saw this article and video today on TPM but originally reported in Rolling Stone, and well covered here at Dkos by Brandi Buchman in which a post-election but pre-insurrection Mastriano prayed during a ‘stop the steal’ styled program for leaders to rise up and seize power on 1/6 (around the 1:50 mark)

“I pray that we’ll take responsibility. We’ll seize the power that we had given to us by the Constitution, and as well by You, providentially,” he said. “I pray for the leaders also in the federal government, God, on the Sixth of January that they will rise up with boldness.”

I can imagine a great ad that lays bear just how extreme this guy is by interspersing this ‘prayer’ with footage of him at 1/6 (yes he was there, but he claims he didn’t go inside) and the insurrectionists attacking the Capitol and law enforcement . We need these kinds of ads now to tell the story of the kind of America these people want to build- and what they see as a reflection of god’s will- them in power at all costs regardless of the people’s will.

I saw Patty Murray’s ads recently showing how this is done (below).  I think this is a winning issue- Americans care about democracy- and all candidates running against insurrectionist should employ the strategy of making them answer for their extremism and make them sweat.
